A Flotilla Tradition

The North Carolina Holiday Flotilla at Wrightsville Beach was conceived in 1984 as a local celebration to welcome the Christmas season to coastal Carolina. Since that time, it has grown in size and popularity to become recognized as one of the top 20 November events in the Southeast. More than 50,000 spectators pack the island to participate in the festivities. Beach crowds resemble those in mid-summer. Cottages are re-opened. Families hold reunions. Flotilla parties are everywhere.

The entire Flotilla is in fact, a day-long party. The full day of entertainment begins at 10:00 AM with the Festival in the Park. Held at Wrightsville Beach Municipal Park, it features booths offering Christmas gifts from local artisans, tasty foods of all kinds from a variety of vendors, and live music from some of the best local musicians. There are rides and special activities for kids of all ages, an art show, and much more. And the park is just a short stroll from the best viewing spots for the evening boat parade and fireworks.

The main event gets underway just after dark at 6:00 PM on the Intracoastal Waterway. The mile long parade of boats, including everything from yachts to personal watercraft, features bright lights, creative decorations, and plenty of holiday spirit. The nautical light and music show begins at the Wrightsville Beach Drawbridge and travels along the shoreline down Motts and Banks Channels to the cheers of the holiday crowds. The uniquely decorated vessels of 30 to 50 local boat owners compete for a myriad of awards.

Immediately following the parade, usually around 7:30 PM, the skies over Wrightsville Beach light up with a spectacular fireworks show choreographed to a medley of holiday music simulcast over local radio stations. Along with the parade entries, the fireworks illuminate the incredible sight of the thousands of people lining every available inch of shoreline and the hundreds of spectator boats anchored in the channel.
